In a world full of so much fake news, hatred and darkness, one can find it hard to keep a positive spirit. With all of this negativity, it is likely that there are times when you feel it impinging upon your own happiness. Finding the positivity during these times is a choice, and it can be hard (I know firsthand). This discovery all starts in your mind.
But how? Here are some ways to give off and attract more positive energy:
Ditch the negativity.
I don’t mean to completely disregard the negativity, but learn not to dwell on it. Bad things happen. You can’t avoid it. Learn to accept the negativity without playing the victim. Take the time to reflect on the situation, talk it out (but no more than you absolutely need to), and find the good in the situation. Everything bad that happens to you in life is either a blessing or a lesson.
Focus, focus, focus.
Focus on your thoughts. Take control of your mood. Practice the art of mindfulness. Make the present moment your mental headquarters.
Take the time to appreciate all of your senses. Maybe you are sitting in the office. You can smell a hot kettle of coffee brewing, your comfy wool sweater is keeping you warm, you smile because you have another amazing day ahead of you. Maybe you are outside enjoy nature’s little wonders. You can hear the wind’s whispers, smell the dewy ground as it defrosts from cold winter and feel your feet crunch on the icy gravel. Taking the time to admire the present moment and the little things in life can easily shift negative energy into positive.
Positive every is infectious. Share it with others by giving compliments. Like that person’s outfit? Let them know. A coworker impressed you with a presentation at work today. Tell them. Your friend is killing it at her fitness goals. Shout it out from the rooftop! We all want to be appreciated and acknowledged. Take the time to share your admiration of others.
Take care of yourself.
I cannot stress the importance of self-care. Taking time for yourself each day will better your physical and mental health and motivate you to take on life’s hardships. Self-care varies for each person. Start with some positive affirmations, a long bath or shower, a walk outside and/or cooking yourself a nutritious meal. Take the time you need to care for yourself. Strive for personal growth.
Discover your passions.
I am sure there is something that you absolutely love doing but can’t seem to find enough time to keep up with it. Change that… NOW! Devote yourself to the things you love. It could be writing, running, kickboxing, yoga, drawing, etc. the list goes on and on. Dedicate time for your passions. Feed your soul with what makes you happy.
Love and accept yourself completely
One of the easiest ways to cultivate negative energy is being hard on yourself. Think about something as simple as your morning routine – you get up, brush your teeth, look in the mirror, get dressed, look in the mirror, style your hair, look in the mirror. You get so focused on your reflection and what you want to change. You are already on the road to negativity. Learn to accept your flaws and to not beat yourself up for what you ‘think’ is wrong about yourself. Replace every negative self-reflection with a positive one.
Ultimately, we are in control of our energy and what most of us don’t realize is that just like positive energy, negative energy can also rub off on others. You have the power to control your mood and boost those around you. You also have the power to darken someone’s day without even knowing it. Take control. Be a ray of sunshine and sprinkle that positive energy wherever you go!
